Meet your art insider: Francine Van Hertsen
Francine Van Hertsen is a renowned art historian and restoration specialist with extensive experience in the United States, France, and Italy. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the École du Louvre, a diploma in painting restoration from the Institute of Restoration in Florence, and an MA in Conservation from NYU’s Conservation Centre. Her career includes internships at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. Upon returning to Europe, she taught scientific methods for art authentication and attribution at ICCROM, an intergovernmental organization located in Rome.
Following the devastating fire in April 2019, Francine played a key role in the restoration of Notre-Dame, specializing in mural painting conservation. Her expertise in art history and hands-on restoration work make her an invaluable guide for the In Situ Art Club's tour of the cathedral. With deep insight into its history, architecture, and restoration process, she brings the story of this iconic monument to life.
